Buying a fridge should be simple. You need something cold, a certain size, and it shouldn't cost a fortune to run. But walk into any appliance store and you'll face 500-odd models with specs like "Twin Cooling Plus", "InstaView Door-in-Door", and "FreshSeal Crisper Technology" — all of which mean completely different things depending on which brand you're looking at.
We've decoded all of it. This guide covers every fridge type available in Australia, the five specs that genuinely matter, and how to spot the marketing fluff that's designed to justify a higher price tag.
The five fridge types and who each suits
Australian households are well-served across the full range of fridge styles. Here's the honest rundown:
Top mount — The freezer sits on top. These are typically the most affordable and most energy-efficient in their size range. If you're budget-conscious or replacing a fridge in a rental, a top mount is hard to beat. The main downside: you're bending down to the fridge section most of the time, and the freezer can be awkward to organise.
Bottom mount — The freezer is at the bottom, so your fridge compartment (the one you use constantly) is at eye level. This is the sweet spot for most Australian households. They're a bit more expensive than top mounts but not dramatically so, and the ergonomics are noticeably better. Energy efficiency is excellent.
French door — Two fridge doors on top, a pull-out freezer drawer below. Great for large households and people who cook seriously. They make it easy to see everything in the fridge and the wide opening suits large platters and trays. The trade-off is price — you'll spend significantly more upfront — and they're often less energy-efficient than a comparably-sized bottom mount.
Side by side — Fridge on one side, freezer on the other, full height. Good if you want lots of freezer space and easy access to both sections. The width can be an issue in smaller kitchens, and the narrow compartments can make storing large items like pizza boxes or roasting trays frustrating.
Integrated — Designed to fit behind cabinetry panels for a seamless kitchen look. Expensive, harder to replace, and typically not as energy-efficient. Worth it if the aesthetic matters more than the budget.

The five specs that actually matter
Ignore the marketing names. These are the numbers and features that have a real impact on your day-to-day experience.
1. Gross capacity (litres)
This is the total internal volume. The rule of thumb used in Australia is 100 litres per adult plus 50 litres per child in your household. A couple would want around 200-300L minimum; a family of four, 300-450L. If you meal prep, entertain frequently, or do a big weekly shop, add another 50-100L.
Pro tip
The "gross" capacity is the total volume. Some manufacturers also list "net" capacity, which is slightly smaller and accounts for shelving and features taking up space. Always compare gross-to-gross or net-to-net — mixing the two will lead you to the wrong size.
2. Annual energy consumption (kWh/year)
This number, printed on the yellow energy label alongside the star rating, tells you exactly how much electricity the fridge uses over a year. It's far more useful than the star rating alone. A 2-star fridge might use less energy than a 4-star fridge if it's significantly smaller. Compare kWh/year directly for the most honest comparison. At current Australian electricity prices (around 30-35 cents/kWh), every 100 kWh/year difference costs about $30-35 on your annual power bill.
3. Noise level (dBA)
Most fridges list their noise output in their specs. Under 40dB is quiet — you won't hear it in an open-plan living space. 40-45dB is noticeable but not intrusive. Over 45dB can be annoying, especially in smaller apartments. This spec is consistently undervalued by buyers and consistently matters once you're living with the appliance.
4. Dimensions (H x W x D)
Measure your space before you buy, including ceiling height and the space needed for ventilation above and behind the unit. Also check the door swing: some fridges need 90cm of clearance to fully open drawers or door-in-door panels. French door fridges are often deeper than standard 600mm cabinetry, which can protrude awkwardly.
5. Refrigerant type
Fridges manufactured after 2020 should use R600a (isobutane) as their refrigerant rather than older HFC gases. R600a is more environmentally friendly and allows for better energy efficiency at smaller compressor sizes. Check this in the spec sheet if environmental impact matters to you.
What the marketing names actually mean
Every major fridge brand has renamed the same underlying technologies with proprietary terms. Here are the most common:
What to ignore
Water dispensers and ice makers — they add complexity, require plumbing (or constant manual refilling), and are a common point of failure. If you actually use crushed ice daily, great. Most people don't.
Door-in-door panels — a small external panel on the fridge door that gives you quick access to drinks without opening the full door. Sounds clever; in practice most people just open the fridge. They add cost and reduce the insulating effectiveness of the door.
Smart connectivity — unless you specifically want to receive a notification when you leave the fridge open, skip it. It adds cost, requires your phone to have the manufacturer's app installed, and the apps have historically had poor long-term support.
The energy label: what you're actually looking at
The yellow Australian Energy Star label shows two things: the star rating (1-6 stars, more is better) and the annual energy consumption in kWh/year. The star rating tells you how this fridge compares to similar-sized fridges currently on the market; the kWh/year tells you your actual running cost.
