How to measure your kitchen for a new fridge

Getting the measurements right before you buy saves you an expensive return trip. Here's what to measure, in which order, and where people consistently go wrong.

Most fridge purchases that end badly don't fail because of a bad product decision. They fail because someone measured once, bought confidently, and discovered the fridge didn't fit when the delivery driver arrived. Then they measured properly. The whole thing could have been avoided in 15 minutes before leaving the house.

This isn't a complicated process. But there are a few specific things that consistently catch people — the measurements they didn't think to take, the clearances they assumed would be fine. Here's what to measure, in the right order, before you walk into a store or add anything to a cart.

The four measurements that actually matter

Before you look at a single fridge, write down these four numbers.

1. Cavity width. This is the width of the opening your fridge sits in — from wall to wall, or from wall to the nearest cabinet. Measure at floor level, at chest height, and near the top. Older kitchens can be uneven, and the narrowest point is the one that matters.

Standard fridge widths in Australia run from 600mm for compact models up to 680mm, 700mm, 790mm, and 900mm-plus for larger French door and side-by-side models. As a rule: buy a fridge at least 20–30mm narrower than your cavity. You need airflow on the sides, and you need enough clearance to slide the fridge in and out without removing the hinges.

2. Depth. Measure from the back wall to the front edge of your benchtop. This is your maximum available depth — but note that door handles will add to the fridge's total protrusion into the room. More on handles shortly.

Most fridge bodies are 650–730mm deep. Whether the fridge sticks out proud of your bench is largely an aesthetic choice — most do, and it's functionally fine. What matters is whether it sticks out so far it blocks foot traffic, hits an island, or makes the bench beside it awkward to use.

3. Height. Measure from the floor to the bottom of any overhead cabinetry. If there's no overhead cabinet, measure to the ceiling.

Leave at least 50mm of clear space above the fridge for ventilation — some manufacturers specify more, but 50mm is the minimum you'll find in most installation guides. Standard overhead cabinets typically sit at 2,100mm from the floor, which is close to the height of many tall fridges. If you're buying anything 1,800mm or taller, check the height specification carefully.

4. Door clearance. When you open the fridge door to 90 degrees, how much space does it need? A standard 600mm-wide bottom mount requires about 600mm of clearance directly in front to open fully. A French door model needs roughly 350mm per half-door.

If there's a wall, island, bench, or dishwasher directly opposite your fridge opening, measure that gap and compare it to the door swing requirement of anything you're considering. This is the measurement most people miss.

The handle problem

Handles add depth that manufacturers often bury in the fine print. The main fridge specification will list the body depth — not total depth including handles. On a bar-handle style fridge, the handle can add 60–80mm. On a recessed handle, it's effectively zero.

If depth is tight or the fridge will open towards a wall or bench, total depth — body plus handle — is the number you care about. Ask for it specifically or check the full dimensions in the product documentation, not just the headline spec.

Some households specifically choose recessed handles for this reason. They also tend to be easier to clean.

Ventilation: required, not optional

Every fridge needs airflow to disperse heat from the compressor and condenser. Box a fridge into a tight cavity with no clearance and it runs hotter, works harder, and fails sooner. The three places to check:

Rear clearance. Most modern fridges have bottom-rear ventilation, which means they can sit close to a wall — but "close" means 25–50mm, not zero. Check the manufacturer's installation requirements before you push it flush.

Side clearance. The 20–30mm you've left on each side isn't just for sliding the fridge in — it's the airflow path. Don't fill it with decorative panels if you can avoid it.

Top clearance. That 50mm above the fridge does real work. If you have overhead cabinets that sit just above the top of the fridge, hot air will trap there and affect how hard the compressor works. If you're building a fitted kitchen around a fridge, check the ventilation specification before finalising the cabinet dimensions.

If you're replacing an existing fridge

There's a specific trap here. People pull out the old fridge, measure the old fridge's dimensions, and assume the replacement can be the same size. But the cavity is what matters, not the old fridge — and the cavity may have become tighter over time due to a new benchtop, a slightly bowed wall, or a cabinet that was added nearby.

Measure the cavity as it exists now. Then measure the new fridge's width, depth, height, and handle protrusion against those numbers before you order.

Also: if the old fridge has been in that spot for years, there's sometimes a slight gap at the rear where the fridge has pushed back slightly. Don't assume the back of the cavity is where you think it is — pull the fridge forward and check.

What size you actually need

Once you have your maximum dimensions, you'll typically have two or three capacity options that fit the space. The right capacity depends on your household:

  • One or two adults: 300–380L is generally more than enough
  • Two adults with young children: 380–480L covers most households comfortably
  • Families of four or more, or anyone who batch cooks or does large weekly shops: 480L and above

There's a consistent tendency to over-buy on capacity. A 600L fridge in a household of two doesn't run more efficiently — it uses the same energy but has more empty space to re-chill every time the door opens. If you're choosing between two models that fit your space, the right one is the smaller one.

The quick checklist before you buy

Before you confirm any purchase, run through this:

  • Cavity width minus 20–30mm minimum clearance each side — does the fridge width fit? ✓
  • Total depth including handle — does it fit without blocking traffic or bench use? ✓
  • Height with 50mm ventilation gap above — does it fit the available opening? ✓
  • Door swing at 90 degrees — is there enough clearance in front? ✓
  • Rear and side ventilation per the manufacturer's specification — have you checked it? ✓

All five checked off means the fridge will fit. Everything after that is a feature decision.
