What to look for in a dishwasher: 7 specs that actually matter

Most dishwasher specs are noise. Here are the seven that actually affect how clean your dishes get, how much water you use, and what you pay to run it.

Most dishwasher buying guides are effectively rebranded spec sheets. They list everything — place settings, number of programs, the branded name of the washing technology — without telling you which of those numbers actually affects your life after the machine is installed.

The real decision comes down to seven specifications. Everything else is marketing surface. Here's what each one means in practice, and what the sensible targets are at each price point.

1. Place settings, not litres

Dishwasher capacity is measured in place settings — a complete dinner setting of plate, side plate, cup, saucer, and cutlery for one person. It's a more useful measure than volume because it reflects how the machine is actually loaded in real life.

For one or two people: 10–12 place settings is generally enough. A slimline 450mm dishwasher (rather than the standard 600mm) is also worth considering if bench space is tight — you'll save 150mm of horizontal bench run and still fit 9–10 place settings.

For two to four people: 13–15 place settings is the standard. Most full-size 600mm dishwashers land here.

For a larger household or anyone who cooks seriously and generates a lot of pots and cookware: look for 15 or more, and pay attention to rack design, not just the headline number. A machine rated at 15 place settings with a rigid, poorly designed upper rack often fits less practical real-world loading than a 13 place-setting machine with good adjustable racks.

2. WELS water rating

The WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) scheme rates dishwashers from 1 to 6 stars. Each additional star reduces water use by roughly 25–30%. A 4-star dishwasher uses around 11–13 litres per standard cycle; a 2-star model uses 18–22 litres.

Run your dishwasher daily, and the difference between a 2-star and a 4-star model is roughly 2,500–3,500 litres of water per year. In states with higher water charges — particularly South Australia and parts of NSW — that translates to $20–$40 annually. Not dramatic in isolation, but it compounds over a decade.

More importantly: water use and energy use move together. More water means more energy to heat it. A more water-efficient dishwasher is almost always a more energy-efficient one.

3. Energy star rating

Australian dishwashers carry a separate energy efficiency rating from 1 to 6 stars. A 4-star model typically uses around 220–260kWh/year in daily use. A 2-star model uses 350–400kWh/year. At 30 cents per kWh — roughly representative of NSW, Victoria, and Queensland — that's a $40–$55 annual difference, or $400–$550 over a 10-year appliance life.

The label assumes a cold-water inlet and standard eco cycle under test conditions. Most dishwashers connect to cold water and heat internally, which is what the label reflects. If your plumbing setup is different, the actual figure will vary.

4 stars or above is a sensible minimum for a new purchase. Below that, you're paying more to run a machine you've already paid for.

4. Noise level (dBA)

If your kitchen and living space are open-plan — which describes most modern Australian homes — dishwasher noise matters more than it used to. You'll run the machine after dinner while people are nearby, while watching something, or while a child is sleeping in an adjacent room.

The practical range:

  • 48dBA and above: Audible from the next room. You'll be aware it's running.
  • 44–47dBA: Present but not intrusive — similar to a quiet conversation in the background.
  • 42–43dBA: Background noise, not annoying in most settings.
  • 40dBA and below: Effectively inaudible from an adjacent room in most homes.

Under 44dBA is a reasonable target for an open-plan space. Under 42dBA starts to cost a noticeable premium for diminishing returns, unless noise is genuinely a priority. Cheap dishwashers in the $700–$900 range often land at 48–52dBA — audible in a way that some households find irritating and others don't notice.

5. Half-load function

A half-load cycle runs the machine using approximately 70–75% of the water and energy of a full cycle, for roughly half the rack space. It's useful for smaller households that don't fill the machine before wanting to run it.

Not all models include it — budget options often don't. If you regularly run the dishwasher when it's half-full, having a dedicated half-load function saves water and energy compared to running a full cycle half-empty. If you typically wait until the machine is full, it doesn't matter.

Couples and people living alone use this function regularly. Households of four or more rarely need it.

6. Adjustable upper rack

This is the feature that sounds minor but affects every load you run. An upper rack that adjusts height on the fly — no tools, one hand — lets you fit tall wine glasses on the top rack when needed, and load deep pots into the lower rack at the same time. A fixed upper rack forces a constant compromise: when it suits your glassware, it doesn't suit your cookware, and vice versa.

The adjustment mechanism matters as much as whether the feature exists. Some racks adjust via a lever or button on the side; others require lifting the whole rack and re-slotting it. Test it in store — a rack that technically adjusts but requires two hands and some effort will rarely get used.

A third rack — a shallow top tray for cutlery and small utensils — frees up the main rack considerably. It lets you lay spatulas, ladles, and small prep bowls flat, which cleans better than standing them in a cutlery basket. It's a convenience feature, but it's a genuinely useful one if you cook regularly.

7. Drying method

Heated drying uses a heating element in the base of the machine to evaporate remaining moisture after the wash. It works, but it runs hot enough to warp or fog plastic containers over time, and it uses meaningful energy for the drying phase alone.

Condensation drying uses residual heat from the final rinse to evaporate moisture, which condenses on the cooler inner walls. No additional energy use. Results are good for crockery, glass, and stainless steel — plastic items often come out damp. This is the standard method on mid-range European-style dishwashers, and for households who primarily wash crockery and glassware, it's perfectly adequate.

Zeolite drying is found on some mid-to-high range models. Zeolite is a mineral that absorbs moisture and releases heat when it does — effectively a passive drying mechanism that's more effective than condensation drying and more energy-efficient than heated drying. Importantly, it performs better on plastic items than either of the other methods. If you regularly wash a lot of plastic containers and want them to come out dry, it's worth looking for specifically.

What you can safely ignore

Number of wash programs. You will use two or three: a standard cycle, an eco cycle, and occasionally an intensive wash for heavily soiled loads. A machine with 12 programs doesn't wash better than one with four. Program count is not a quality signal.

Branded technology names. "EcoPerfect," "SteamZone," "ActiveWater" — marketing labels for what are usually standard functions (eco cycle, steam pre-wash, sensor-adjusted water use). Identify the underlying function you want and check the specification for it directly.

Interior lighting. Useful for loading in a dim under-bench cavity. Functionally irrelevant to cleaning performance.

Self-cleaning filters vs manual filters. Most modern dishwashers use a manual filter that needs rinsing every week or two. Self-cleaning (grinder) filters exist but are less common in Australia. Manual is fine and doesn't represent a meaningful trade-off at any price point.
