Understanding the numbers
Where to find your kWh/year
The yellow energy rating label on every Australian appliance shows the estimated annual kWh consumption. This is the most accurate number for that specific model — it's also listed in the product specifications online and on the manufacturer's website.
Why the star rating can mislead
A 4-star fridge that's 700L can use more energy than a 3-star fridge that's 400L. Stars compare products within similar size bands, not across them. The kWh/year number is what actually hits your electricity bill — always use it for cost calculations.
Features that increase running costs
Ice makers add roughly 50–100 kWh/year. Water dispensers add 30–50 kWh/year. Smart connectivity adds 20–40 kWh/year of standby draw. Anti-frost systems add 10–30 kWh/year. These are rarely reflected in the headline energy label figure.
Peak vs off-peak tariffs
If you're on a time-of-use tariff, when you run the appliance matters. Running your dishwasher or dryer during off-peak hours (typically 10pm–7am or midnight–6am) can halve the per-cycle cost. Check your bill or retailer for your tariff structure.
