Will your fridge actually fit? Check the nook, the delivery path, and door opening clearance — the three things most people forget to measure before buying.

One of the most common appliance buying mistakes is ordering a fridge that fits the space on paper but fails on delivery day — blocked by a hallway turn, a narrow doorway, or a door that won't open fully once installed. This tool walks you through the three checks that matter.

Your fridge space

Measure the narrowest point. If your cabinets aren't perfectly plumb, use the tightest measurement.

Getting it into the kitchen

Common fridge-fit mistakes

The 'but it fit the space' mistake

Most people measure the nook and stop there. But a fridge that fits the kitchen cavity can still be impossible to deliver. The front door, any hallway, and tight corners all need to be wider than the fridge. This is the single most common fridge buying mistake in Australia.

The side-wall problem

A single-door fridge needs roughly 60% of its width as clear space on the hinge side for the door to open fully and let drawers slide out. If you have a wall or cabinet on the hinge side, you either need more clearance than you might think, or a French door model — which only needs about 30% per door.

Ventilation isn't optional

Fridges need airflow to dissipate heat from the compressor. Leave at least 25mm on both sides and the top, and 50mm at the back. Cramming a fridge into a tight nook without ventilation space raises the running temperature, increases energy consumption, and shortens the compressor's lifespan.

Depth includes the handle

Manufacturer depth specs typically measure to the back of the fridge body. Traditional bar handles add 30–50mm to the front. If your cabinets are flush with the wall and you're trying to fit the fridge under overhead cabinetry, account for handle protrusion — or look for a recessed handle model.
